Where did educational Blogging originate?

To start with I’m delving into the origins of edublogging  – for the purposes of our research project – and so far my searches give lots of useful information but don’t seem to be able to nail relevant dates or persons (for example the wikipedia entry on this is brief!).

So to start with I’ve emailed James Farmer today and asked for his take. Please feel free to add your comments/thoughts/links and Season’s Greetings to all edubloggers!

The Guardian has a nice feature on the recent problems affecting the wikipedia ethos – “log on and join in, but beware the web cults” with the author suggesting that “Wikipedia, and so many other online activities, show all the outward characteristics of a cult”

So what is a Wiki? The best place to start to answer this is the Wikipedia definition

The Wikimedia Foundation Inc. is the parent organization of Wikipedia.

MediaWiki is a Wiki software package licensed under the GNU General Public License. It is a feature-rich wiki implementation written primarily for Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects, but can also be used by other wikis.

Wikis in Education

Within this category I will be looking at the use of wikis within education and whether they might be of any use within IHCS.

IHCS Distance Learning

Within this category I will be detailing blogging developments within the Institute of Health & Community Studies (IHCS) distance learning units. IHCS provides programmes in three main areas: nursing, midwifery and social & community studies. Postgraduate and professional study and research is offered across a range of inter-disciplinary practice-based themes. IHCS is one of the academic schools of Bournemouth University.
