Wessex Bay Article in Nurse Education Today

Our paper (written with Janet Scammell and Michael Martin) “Enabling interprofessional education: the role of technology to enhance learning” has now been published in Nurse Education Today.

This paper considers the development of the HSC Wessex Bay simulated community from both technical and pedagogical perspectives with the curricular context for the development considered and the role of simulation in meeting educational needs explored. The technical development is outlined alongside an overview of an evaluation of its use. Conclusions are drawn around the strengths and limitations of this approach and include a consideration of further opportunities for developmental work.

The summary and full report from the E-Learning project “A Virtual Practice Community for student learning and staff development in Health and Social work Inter-professional education; Changing practice through Collaboration” written by Janet Scammell et al. (including myself) is also availabe from the HSP website under Completed Projects.

Virtual Patients (Phase 1 and 2)

The Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London has developed a region in Second Life that aims to design game-based learning activities for delivery of virtual patients that can drive experiential, diagnostic, and role-play learning activities supporting patients’ diagnoses, investigations and treatment. Phase II of this project introduces a multi-patient approach. Five virtual patients suffering from different respiratory problems, such as: Lung Cancer, Pneumothorax and Pneumonia have been implemented. The same narrative and activity model is applied for all the patients. More demanded feedback and guidance for cyclical content have been introduced in this phase.
