When is a Wiki an Assignment?

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

An example of how Wikipedia is being used as an assignment in the classroom.

Even more interesting if you scroll down to the comments for this article you find a post from Larry Sanger (I’ve mentioned Citizendium before but not seen anything up until this point on Eduzendium)

“The Citizendium project has started a pilot project that encourages professors to assign work on Citizendium articles to their students. See http://www.eduzendium.org/

This is a better locale because (1) we have many, many open topics that Wikipedia does not, and (2) our community is led by experts and generally saner and friendlier.

Plymouth 2.0 Trip

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

A really interesting trip to the University of Plymouth yesterday to talk with Steve Wheeler (Faculty of Education) and Maged Boulos (Faculty of Health & Social Work) about what they were up to in Second Life and elsewhere in the world of Web 2.0. I’ve come back with a big list of reading and links (a sample of which is below…)

Mashing, Burning, Mixing and the Destructive Creativity of Web 2.0: Applications for Medical Education

Wikis, blogs and podcasts: a new generation of Web-based tools for virtual collaborative clinical practice and education

SL Healthy Wiki

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Whilst googling (!) today I was delighted to come across an old Jaiku post saying I’d motivated PF Anderson to create a SL Healthy Wiki. A great idea and obviously she’s been a lot busier with her project than we have with ours recently (!). This is definitely something else to examine in more detail at a later date.

The concept of Wikis used as a portal for pointing to other web information is an idea I’m pursuing with the Patient Journey wiki (also in Wetpaint - snap) and you can find out more about this project or get involved with it here.

Patient Journeys Wiki Initiated

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

I’ve now begun work on the first of two wikis which will form the basis of my research project. The project aims to investigate the use of wikis as an online social space/environment for patients and practitioners who wish to share personal experiences of healthcare and medical treatment as they embark or have embarked on their “patient journey”.

Patient Journeys Wiki is a place to document existing patient journeys already available on the web. I’ve added some links to some existing resources that include Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, IVF, Cystic Fibrosis and Multiple Sclerosis. If you would like to join this project as a contributor to the wiki or have a link that you feel would add something to this online resource then please get in touch with me.

Transliteracy Project

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Transliteracy is defined by PART as the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms, tools and media from signing and orality through handwriting, print, TV, radio and film, to digital social networks. This work is following on from the Tags Networks Narrative project which I along with many others took part in last year. Interesting to see how it develops….
